Funeral Mass for Sarah M. Anzelc, 96, of Duluth, formerly of Biwabik, will be 11am Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Biwabik with Fr. Steven Daigle as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at church. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Mrs. Anzelc died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at the Franciscan Health Center in Duluth. She was born March 25, 1914 in Park River, ND to James R. and Mary (Duffy) Gillespie. Sarah was a graduate of Park River High School and later earned her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Mayville State Teachers College. Sarah taught elementary school in North Dakota. She also served with the US Army, 2500 Base Unit in Orlando, Texas. On July 16, 1949 she married Frank J. Anzelc in Grand Forks, ND. She taught elementary for 22 years in Mt. Iron and served as Principal at Washington Elementary in Biwabik. Sarah was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women, the Biwabik and Mt. Iron Sr. Citizens and served on the St. Louis County Aging Committee. She was also a member of the Biwabik American Legion Post and was named Biwabik Citizen of the Year in 1997. Survivors include her son, Patrick Anzelc of St. Paul, daughter, Mary Colleen (Allen) Shostedt of Duluth, brother, Vernon Gillespie of Pisek, ND, grandchildren, Leah (Michael) McNulty, Meggan (Steven) Johnson and Colleen (Craig) Buchanan, great grandchildren, Rhiannon, Lauren and Samuel McNulty and Mycala and Paiton Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Wallace in WWII, husband, Frank and sister, Alyce Liming
