Alice J. Niemi, 97, of Aurora Funeral Service: 11 AM Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Paul Buettner will be officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. Alice Johanna Niemi, 97, of Aurora died Monday, March 28, 2011 at the Northern Pines Essentia Health, formerly known as White Community Hospital & Skilled Nursing Facility in Aurora. Alice was born June 10, 1913 to Jacob and Emma (Peispinen) Johnson in Trout Lake, MN. She grew up and attended school in Trout Lake. Following school, Alice moved to Duluth where she worked as a maid while attending night school to pursue furthering her education. She had the opportunity to live in many several area towns including Grand Rapids & Hibbing, & Virginia. It was in Virginia that she met her husband, William John Niemi. The couple was united in marriage on September 1, 1959 in Virginia. Together, they made their home in Virginia and raised a family. In 1991, the couple moved to Aurora. Alice enjoyed traveling with her husband. They shared the pleasure of cruising around the world together to exotic places such as the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Pacific coast, the Mississippi and Rhine River. Alice enjoyed visiting with friends, doing crafts, and caring for her home and garden. Survivors include: One son: Thomas (Lynn) Niemi of Aurora One daughter: Brenda Niemi of Embarrass Grandchildren: Mariann (Jon) Bouska of Virginia Lisa (Edmond) Kirchner of Golden Valley, MN One Great-Grandchild: Wesley Kirchner of Golden Valley, MN One sister: Margaret Johnson of Grand Rapids, MN Numerous nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her husband, William Niemi (2003); a daughter, Marilyn Ojanpa in 1992; a grandson, Curtis; four sisters; three brothers; and a son-in-law, Wesley Ojanpa; and her parents.
