Garth Eugene Hogan Graveside service for Garth E. Hogan, 91, of Duluth, formerly of Hoyt Lakes, will be 10am Tuesday, April 26, 2011 in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Barbara Hegfors officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Methodist Church in Hoyt Lakes. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Garth died Thurs. April 14, 2011 at Westwood Assisted Living in Duluth, MN. The beloved husband of the late Marion "Jo" Hogan who predeceased him in September 2000. Garth was born March 12, 1920 in Hibbing Minnesota and graduated from Hibbing High School in June of 1938. He attended Hibbing Junior College and was inducted into the Naval Air Corps serving as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class, and a Propeller Instructor at the Navy's Technical Training Center in Norman Oklahoma from 1940 until 1944. After the end of World War II, Garth returned to Hibbing with his new bride, Jo, where he worked for the Oliver Iron Mining Company (OIM) which is now known as Minnesota Ore Operations, USS Corp. From 1955 to 1957 Garth worked for Cashion and Ericson as the general manager of a construction project that built the railroad grade and track that runs from the Erie Mining company plant in Hoyt Lakes, to Taconite Harbor on Lake Superior. In 1957 Garth and Jo and their 2 sons moved to Hoyt Lakes where he served as Foreman, Chief Metallurgist and General Forman for the Erie Mining Company until his retirement in 1983. Garth and Jo have been members of Trinity Methodist Church in Hoyt Lakes since 1957. Garth served as Trinity's Lay Leader for 5 years during the construction of the church. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Arrowhead Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He is survived by his sons Patrick (Joan) Hogan and David Hogan, granddaughters Carrie Hogan of Manassas , Virginia; Kelly (Michael) Hogan Graham of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and two great grandchildren, Skylar and Avery.
