Graveside service for Bertle "Herb" Bakkethun, 83, of Aurora, will be 11:45am Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Pastor Alan Naumann will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice. Local arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Mr. Bakkethun died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at St. Raphael's Health and Rehab Center in Eveleth. He was born January 7, 1928 in Goodhue County, Minnesota to Iver and Johanna (Hallanger) Bakkethun. He attended country schools in Kenyon and Cannon Falls, MN. Herb served with the US Navy from 1945-1946 aboard the USS Pecos and the USS Otus. Herb married Carol Haggstrom in Spring Garden, MN. Following their marriage, they lived in Cannon Falls and in 1957 moved to northern Minnesota. He worked for Erie Mining Company for several years. Later he attended welding school and worked as a boilermaker until his retirement. He was an avid reader who enjoyed mysteries, westerns and historical non-fiction. Survivors include his wife, Carol, children: Dennis Bakkethun of Aurora, Sandra Bakkethun of Krum, TX and Linda (Fred) Batchelor of Smithfield, Virginia; grandchildren: Justin (Stephanie) Bakkethun, Tyler Bakkethun, Christopher Batchelor and Bryan Batchelor; great grandchildren: Gracie and Lexie Bakkethun. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister in infancy, a brother and an infant granddaughter.
