Funeral service for Harold Hjalmer Mattson, 87, of Palo, will be 10am Friday, February 24, 2012 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora with Fr. Steven Daigle officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in the Rauha Cemetery in White Township, MN. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Harold died Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at St. Raphael's Health and Rehab Center in Eveleth, MN. He was born April 18, 1924 in Marengo, WI to Hjalmer and Anna (Elson) Mattson. Following his schooling, he served with the US Navy during WWII. On Aug. 8, 1959 he married Bernice Carbon in Highbridge, WI. Harold worked at the St. James Mine and later worked for Reserve Mining Company where he retired as a truck driver. Following his retirement he worked at the Aurora Forestry Department as a groundskeeper with the Aurora Senior Program. He was a member of the Aurora American Legion Post 241. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Bernice; daughters, Sue (Steve) Blake of Palo, Lori Banker of Apple Valley and Julie (Mark) Warren of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, Leah Blake, Ashlynn and Evan Mattson and Brad Blake; great grandchild, Bailey Blake; siblings, June Nelmark, Olga Hanka, Jeanette Kivi and Jim Mattson; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; siblings, Carol Hokinen, Ruth Tuominen, Bill Mattson, Wally Mattson, Lloyd Mattson and Teddy Mattson.
