Mary Klobuchar Snyder died Feb. 27, 2012 at the Virginia Convalescent Care Center. Mary was 101 years old and approaching her 102nd birthday on Sept. 8, 2012. Mary had been living at the Virginia Convalescent Care Center since July 2011. Prior to this she had lived at Broadview Manor in Gilbert for five years. While at Broadview Manor, Mary received exceptional care from the Spectrum organization and friendly attention from her friends. Mary's first job, at the age of 16, was in 1926 when she was a cook at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth while earning $1.00 a day including room and board. Mary had been a life member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, a member of the Council of Catholic Women, the St. Jude Circle and she served as the first President of St. Teresa's Guild. Mary also served as chairperson for the American Red Cross, was a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary for 48 years as well as and active member of the American Legion for 44 years. In 1992, the VFW named Mary a Gold Star Sister for her two brothers, Mark and George Klobuchar who were both killed in Europe while in service during World War II. Mary was a life-time member of the Croatian Fraternal Union and served as their Treasurer for seven years. She and her late husband worked for many years delivering meals on wheels. Mary was also a volunteer for many community programs and events while cooking and serving meals for numerous local weddings and funerals. On July 3, 1994, Mary was selected as the Grand Marshal of the Gilbert Fourth of July Parade, being recognized for her many years of service to the Gilbert community. Mary was a very friendly and social person who often exhibited a positive and joking spirit. Her family would like to extend their gratitude to the care-givers and staff of the Virginia Convalescent Care Center for their outstanding, dedicated and continued care of Mary for the past seven months. Her life there was most comfortable and calming. Survivors include her children, Andrew (Valerie) Snyder of Ely Lake, Marlene (James) Larson of Shakopee and Glenn Snyder of Duluth; her siblings, Katherine, Ann, Margaret and Louis; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
