Marian L. Cherne

Marian Louise (Rautio) Cherne, 89, of Ely, Minn., died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, February 28, 2012. She was born January 27, 1923 in Fargo, N.D. Marian was active in the First Presbyterian Church, Ely Music and Drama Club, Ely Watercolor Club, Mesabi Community Orchestra, and Henry’s Wives. She enjoyed her summers at the family cabin on Burntside Lake. Marian was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alberta (Gardner) Rautio, and her husband, Leslie George Cherne. Survivors include her partner, Calvin Herrala; a brother, Richard Gardner Rautio (Ann) of Aurora, Colo.; five children: Denise Lynn Paulisich (Paul) of Aurora, Minn., David Michael Cherne (Deb) of Ely, Minn., J. Stephen Cherne (Rebecca Ellenson) of Duluth, Minn., Margaret Beth Cherne (Cindy Killion) of Fountain City, Wis., and Mark Allen Cherne (Lynda) of Hudson, Wis. She also is survived by seven grandchildren: Matthew Paulisich, Marie Paulisich, Paulette (Dwayne) Walters, Danielle (Jerry) Weiner, Chad Cherne (Mandy), Kathryn (Casey) Cherne and Kelsey Cherne. Also, two step-grandchildren: Peter Ellenson - Myer and Cora Beth Ellenson-Myer. She also is survived by four great-grandchildren: Easton Walters; Sophia, Ian and Logan Cherne. A memorial service will be held 1pm Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ely, MN with Pastor Elizabeth Morgan officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
