Steve Joseph Kovatovich, of rural Gilbert, 93, died peacefully at home Monday May 21, 2012. A private family urn burial will take place later at Lakeside Cemetery. Steve served in the US Marines in WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He achieved the rank of SSgt in 4 years, and returned to work in the mines after the service. Steve worked as a mechanic, working his way up into supervisory position. He worked for various mining companies in the industry for 40 years. Steve was a member of the Gilbert VFW. Steve enjoyed living in the country, gardening, and a good polka tune. He was a talented cook, and lived up to the saying, "Once a marine, always a marine". Steve is dearly loved and will be sorely missed. Steve is survived by son Robert (Debra) Kovatovich, daughters Becky (Bob) Sharp, Patricia (John) Hull; two grandchildren Beth Sharp, Christine Kovatovich; great-grandchildren Damion Miller, Katie Kovatovich. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Magdalene (Novaci) Kovatovich; wife Carol (Peterson); brother Tony, George, John, sisters Kate, infant Barbara, Ann, Mary, and Barbara.
