Funeral mass for John Edward Biondich, 90, of Gilbert, will be 10am Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gilbert with Fr. Charles Flynn as celebrant. Visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 5-7pm at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and will continue for one hour prior to mass at the church. Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. John died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012 at St. Raphael's Health and Rehab Center in Eveleth, MN. He was born Jan. 26, 1922 in Gilbert, MN to Paul and Mary Biondich. John was a graduate of Gilbert High School and later worked on the AL-CAN Highway and in the shipyards in Bremerton, WA. John returned to Gilbert and worked for several mining companies. In the 1940's he began working for J&L Mine and on May 1, 1948 he married Marie Majetich in Virginia, MN. He retired as a maintenance mechanic foreman from McKinley Mine-LTV Steel. John was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Croatian Fraternal Union. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren taking them fishing and for pontoon boat rides at the cabin on Lost Lake. He didn’t take kindly to being idle and spent time at the shack, hunting, splitting wood, gardening, making wine, sausage & baskets. He & Marie enjoyed the CFU picnics and especially dancing to polka and tamburitza music. Survivors include his children, Joe (Kathy) Biondich of Hutter, Steve (Pam) Biondich of Palo, Paul Biondich of Gilbert and Rosanne (Scotty) Omersa of Gilbert; grandchildren, Jena (Aron) Levandowski, Joe (Paula) Biondich, Katie Biondich, Steve (Angie) Biondich, Carrie (Josh) Berndt and Shane and Casey Omersa; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Lucas and Abbie; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marie (2008); sisters, Ann Kulaszewicz, Mary Oberstar, Helen Vingles and Katie Delak.
