Helen G. Mattson

Helen Gertrude Mattson, 82, of Biwabik passed away peacefully Saturday November 3, 2012 at Essentia St. Mary's in Duluth. Funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday November 9, 2012 at United Church of Christ in Biwabik. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Re. Rod Slessor officiating. Services by Ziemer Moeglein Shatava Funeral Home of Gilbert. Helen was born March 16, 1930 to Helge Mahala and Vieno Lehto in Eveleth, Minnesota. She lived and attended school in Biwabik. Helen married Eino Mattson on February 27, 1954 and she became a homemaker, raising their three children. She also was a special education aide at the Biwabik schools, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Women's Life Association, Biwabik Senior Citizens, and the Biwabik United Church of Christ. Helen enjoyed spending time with her friends, whether at the Arrowhead Concert Series, or playing cards at the senior center. She also enjoyed spending summers relaxing at the cabin on Bass Lake with family. Helen was especially proud of all her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed. Helen is survived by three children; Tom Mattson of rural Gilbert, Sue (Robert) Kurak of Lino Lakes, Sally (Rob) Peyla of Biwabik; five grandchildren Sean, Andrew, and Justin Peyla, Ethan and Reed Kurak. She is preceded in death by her parents; stepfather George Hogan; and husband Eino.
