Robert Reed Carpenter, 80, of Hoyt Lakes, died Saturday December 15, 2012 peacefully surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday December 18 at the Ziemer Moeglein Shatava Funeral Home of Aurora, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Wednesday Mass of Christian Burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Hoyt Lakes. Fr. Steven Daigle officiating, interment at Hoyt Lakes Cemetery. Bob was born November 10, 1932 to Clarence and Bertha (Duncan) Carpenter in Bena, Minnesota. Bob was a golden gloves boxer in his youth, and graduated from Greenway High School in 1951. He began his career in mining after school working at the Tioga mine. Bob served in the Korean Conflict in the US Army infantry. After recovering from a war injury in Japan, he returned to the states. He married Florence Mattfeld, together they began their family in Cohasset, and later moved to Hoyt Lakes. Bob worked at the West Hill mine until he transferred to Erie Mining Co. in '68. Bob was general foreman of maintenance at Erie until his retirement in 1992 after 40 years of service. He also coached youth hockey, planting the seeds that would later become several division 1 hockey players. Bob was also rec director for Hoyt Lakes parks department for many years. Bob was a great father and grandfather who worked hard and played even harder. His patriotic, fun-loving spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Bob is preceded in death by; his parents; 1st wife of 50 years, Florence; son Scott Carpenter; siblings Ronald Carpenter, Lois Beaulieu. Bob is survived by; spouse Arleen; children Joe Carpenter of Hoyt Lakes, Barb (Tony) Pollack of Ironwood, MI, Reed (Lou) Carpenter of Jasper, AL; Jim (Barbie) Carpenter of Elk River, MN, Bobbi (Mark) Losure of Mazeppa, MN, Becky (Wilson) Walker of St. Paul, MN; 17 grandchildren, Christina, Becca, Lizzy, Robbie, Joey, Jill, Joanna, Annette, Carrie, Matt, Sarah, Travis, Amanda, Scott, Clara, Jim, Jake; 5 great-grandchildren, Adam, Andrew, Ava, Claire, Hartley; siblings Beth Anderson of Hoyt Lakes, Dave (Julie) Carpenter of Grand Rapids, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.
