Funeral service for Richard D. Erickson, 79, of Biwabik Township, will be 1:30pm Friday, March 1, 2013 at Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik with Reverend Rodney Slessor officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7pm at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be in the Biwabik Township Cemetery. Richard died Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Essentia Health in Duluth, MN. Richard was born April 2, 1933 in Eveleth, to Olaf and Myrtle (Swanson) Erickson. He was a graduate of Gilbert High School and following that, he immediately began working for Erie Mining Company. Richard retired from LTV Steel in 1994 as a crane operator with 43 years of service. He enlisted with the US military and served during the Korean Conflict. Richard married Doris Stone on April 26, 1969 in Eveleth, MN. Richard was a member of Community United Church of Christ, the Peterson-Lofquist-Bronczyk American Legion Post and Steelworkers Union 4108. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. Richard enjoyed being outdoors and cutting wood. Survivors include his sons, Harold Seay of Boston, Mass, Nels (Joan Zurn) Erickson of Eden Prairie and Carl Erickson of Lakeville; brothers, Donald Erickson of Hutter and Ray (Linda) Erickson of Virginia; special friend and companion, Jean Maki of Virginia; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris and sister, Shirley Fumia.
