Funeral service for Robert John Smith, 75, of Hoyt Lakes, will be 11am Friday, March 1, 2013 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora with Pastor Brendan Johnston officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7pm at the funeral home and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Friday. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. Robert died suddenly Sunday, February 24, 2013 at his residence. He was born June 5, 1937 in Superior, WI to Arlew and Lillian (Haiden) Smith. Robert was a graduate of Bayfield High School and shortly after that served in the US Army. On November 26, 1960 he married Judy Giersdorf in Bayfield. Robert worked for Erie Mining Company and retired from LTV Steel as a car repairman. Robert enjoyed playing guitar and singing in country bands throughout the Iron Range. He was a member of SOAR and the Steelworkers Union 4108. His pass times included fishing, partridge hunting, singing karaoke and taking vacations with Alane and Tom. Robert was an avid Green Bay Packers Fan. Survivors include his dauughters, Terry (Larry) Olmstead of Hoyt Lakes and Lynne Smith-Grivette of Lakewood, CO; grandchildren, Jed (Melanie) Olmstead of Hoyt Lakes, Anna Olmstead of Hoyt Lakes, Jillian Grivette of Duluth and David and Riley Grivette of Lakewood, CO; great grandchildren, Brennan Scott, Kerbie Olmstead, Jessa Olmstead and Emmett Hafdahl; mother-in-law, Arline Giersdorf of Chisholm; brothers, James, Carl and William; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Judy.
