Oiva E. Maki

Funeral service for Oiva E. Maki, 75, of Hoyt Lakes, will be 11am Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes with Pastors Cory Maunu and Brendan Johnston officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7pm at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora with a Masonic service at 6:30pm. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Burial with military honors accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. Oiva died Monday, March 11, 2013 while vacationing in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born July 31, 1937 in Wakefield, Michigan to Oiva and Annette Maki. Following his schooling, he enlisted with the US Air Force and served for four years. He began working for Erie Mining Company and later married Darlene Maki on Nov. 23, 1960 in Wakefield, Michigan. Oiva re-enlisted with the Air Force and served four more years. He returned to work in the mines, and retired from LTV Steel as a Supervisor with 38 years of service. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Aurora American Legion, the Engineers Club, where he served as past president, and the Biwabik Chapter of the Masonic Lodge. He was also one of the founders of the Iron Range Carbuffs, where he served as president. Oiva was a collector of antiques and was a military historian. Oiva was especially a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had a great sense of humor and for most that met him, didn't forget him. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Darlene; daughter, Jayme Thuringer of Hoyt Lakes; son, Bruce (Karen) Maki of Aurora; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers, Forrest Maki of Superior and David Maki of Doylestown, OH; brother and sister in law, Dewey and Rosie Maki and their son, Derek, of Hoyt Lakes; several nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
