Funeral service for Robert Melvin Larson, 78, of Biwabik, will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Fr. Frank F. Perkovich officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik. Bob died Friday, May 31, 2013 at Essentia Health - Northern Pines Medical Center in Aurora. He was born October 3, 1934 in Biwabik, MN to Melvin and Olga (Johnson) Larson. Bob was a 1952 graduate of Biwabik High School and was later inducted into the US Army. There, he was restationed to Germany and was honorably discharged as an Expert Carbine/ Expert Sub-Machine Gun and Sharpshooter of Rifle M1. He also received the Good Conduct Medal. Following his military service, he worked for the DMIR Railroad. On May 3, 1958 he married Ann Strupi. Bob began working for Erie Mining Company and retired from LTV Steel as a gifted welder with 33 years of service. He was also a retired, faithful member of the Biwabik Volunteer Fire/Ambulance Department. Most of Bob's life from a very early age was spent in the woods where he lived and breathed hunting. Some of his other interests included fishing, wild-ricing, his dogs and polkas. He also built a hunting shack/outdoor sauna with friends where he hosted amazing annual Shack Parties and spent countless hours throughout the years when he just had to get out of Dodge. Survivors include his daughters: Bonnie Larson, Karen Larson and Kim (Mark) Saari all of Biwabik; granddaughter, Sara Moehlenbrock of Plymouth; sisters: Ione Doig of Bloomington, Yvonne Akey of Las Vegas, NV and Fay (John) Krogstad of Grandview, IA; half-brother, Jerry (Bev) Fischer of Minneapolisseveral nieces nephews and many special friends.
