A Memorial Service for Gunnar W. Lund, 77, of Hoyt Lakes, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on August 6th, at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora, MN, with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Barbara Hegfors will officiate. Military honors will be accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard. Gunnar W. Lund passed away on Wednesday, July 24th, at his birthplace, St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, MN, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He was born to Gunnar and Sylvia (Koskiniemi-Makela) Lund. Raised in Makinen, MN, he graduated from Cotton High School in 1953. Gunnar married his classmate, Kathleen Hanson, of Canyon, MN, on his 21st birthday, December 22nd, 1956. After attending Eveleth Junior College, he enlisted with the United States Air Force and served in the Azores. In 1963, he began a long career at Dow Chemical Company. His career brought his family to Arizona, Texas and Kansas. Wherever his feet landed, he cherished family, friends and neighbors. He loved people! He was also a former member of the Elks Club in Tucson, AZ and AIME. A few of his favorite things included fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, playing cards and driving with his Waschke friends. Your sweet, silly jokes and stories will live on. You have put smiles on the faces of so many and we are proud to call you Husband, Dad, Brother and Friend! We love you. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; son, Michael (Debbie) Lund of Apple Valley, Ca; daughter, LuAnn (Michael) Holmes of Phoenix, AZ; brother, Kenneth (Patricia) Lund of Hoyt Lakes; sisters, Carol (Jerry) Nylund of Biwabik and Ellen (Edward) Prinkkila of Hoyt Lakes; grandchildren, Shane (Desiree) Lund; Melissa (Cade) McCutcheon; Christina Lund (Daniel); Heather Lund; Jason (Brittny) Holmes; Brian Holmes; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Hildur; brother, Melvin; and an infant brother.
