Funeral service for Robert Giuliani, of Hoyt Lakes, will be 10am Wednesday September 25, 2013 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Hoyt Lakes with Fr. Steven Daigle officiating. There will be no visitation prior to the service. Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Robert Giuliani, of Hoyt Lakes, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 at his home. He was 87. Bob was born Feb. 11, 1926 in Bessemer, Mich. to Sisinio and Zella Giuliani. He graduated from high school in Bessemer, Michigan in 1943. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Corps in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater aboard the Carrier, U.S.S. Monterey for 13 months and 23 combat missions as a member of Torpedo Squadron #34 where he was awarded three Air Medals and recommended for the Distinguished Fly Cross for his role in the sinking of the finest heavy cruiser in the Japanese Navy, The Tone. He was discharged in 1946 and attended the Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Michigan for two years. He then attended Northern Michigan University at Marquette, Michigan majoring in Chemistry. Bob began employment with Pickands Mather in 1950 and then transferred to Erie Mining Company at Hoyt Lakes in 1958 where he worked in the Safety and Industrial Hygiene Departments until his retirement in 1986. On Veteran’s Day, 1997 he was inducted into the Naval Combat Air crewman’s Roll of Honor at the Naval and Maritime Museum in Patriots Point, South Carolina. Bob was a member of the Engineer’s Club of Northern Minn., the American Legion and the VFW. He married Norma Menara in Bessemer, Michigan on April 23, 1949. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing. He was a summer resident of Cook, Minn. at his Lake Vermilion Cabin since 1972. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, wife Norma, sister Dorothy and an infant sister. Bob is survived by his daughters, Patricia Giuliani of Madison, Wisc., Diane (Jake Benson) Giuliani of Proctor and Dr. JoAnn Giuliani of Astoria, Oregon; sister Laraine Tracy of Bloomington, Minn.; brother Eugene (Marie) of Inver Grove Heights, Minn: grandchildren Alyssa and Robert Stefanelli; special friends Donald and Marjorie Markwardt and Mary Hovland.
