Funeral service for George Merton "Mert" Sedgeman, 86, of Gilbert, will be 10:30am Monday January 20, 2014 at United In Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth with Rev. Emily Rova-Hegener officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4pm at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial with military honors accorded by the Gilbert VFW will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Mert died Tues. January 14, 2014 at his residence. He was born July 22, 1927 in Elcor Location to William and Christine (Williams) Sedgeman. Following his graduation from Gilbert High School, he served with the Sea-Bees in the US Navy during WWII. On March 18, 1950 he married Verna Gulbranson in Eveleth. Mert worked for Erie Mining Co. and retired from LTV Steel as an auto mechanic with 38 years of service. During that time he also owned and operated Lakeshore Excavating as the 'low bidder' from 1968-2010. He was an active member of the George and Mark Klobuchar VFW Post, serving as Commander and District Commander. He was also a member of the Eveleth Elks #1161, the Fayal Volunteer Fire Departmant and United In Christ Lutheran Church. Survivors include: his children, Merna (Randy) Conner of Kingman, AZ, Robert (Jackie) Sedgeman of Eveleth, Brenda (Mick) Wudinich of Eveleth, Glen (Kathy) Sedgeman of rural Gilbert, Tracy (Rick) Coldagelli of Eveleth; fourteen grandchildren: Christine (Mark) Mathieu, Caren (Eric Johnson) Conner, Cherie (Ron) Motley, Kim (Tom DeBaere) Gramm, Cory (Shelly Tanski) Sedgeman, Jennifer (Mike) Rouleau, Angela (Eion) Foote, Derek (Taylor) Wudinich, Jeffery Wudinich, Leah (John) Masonick, David (Olivia) Tokarczyk, Kyle (Tiffany Jenner) Coldagelli, Kelsey Coldagelli and Nicole Esala; Eleven great-grandchildren; siblings, William (Marie) Sedgeman of Warren, MN and Louise Holmes of Biwabik; several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verna; brother, Charles; a grandson, Paul Conner; and a great-grandson, Zachary Motley.
