Thomas Murphy

Funeral Mass for Thomas P. Murphy, 89, of Eveleth, formerly of Biwabik, will be 10am Monday, March 17, 2014 at St. John's Catholic Church in Biwabik with Fr. Steven Daigle as celebrant.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at church.  Burial with military honors accorded by the Gilbert VFW Post will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik, MN.  Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.   Mr. Murphy died Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Willow wood Assisted Living in Eveleth, MN.   He was born February 4, 1925 in Gilbert, MN to Thomas and Jenny (Pauline) Murphy.  He attended Gilbert Schools and later enlisted with the US Army.  Thomas served during WWII in the Guadalcanal and the South Pacific Theater where he received the Bronze Star.   On March 20, 1946 he married Edith "Mae" Goldsworthy.  Tom began working at the Corsica Mine, Lake Mine and transferred to Erie Mining Company where he retired as a driller with 44 years of service.   Tom was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Biwabik American Legion.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and especially enjoyed trips to the Boundary Waters.   Survivors include his children: Jerry (Donna) Murphy of Gilbert, Carolyn (Gary) Werkhoven of Duluth and Susan (Don) Malenius of Biwabik; grandchildren: Carrie and Shannon Murphy, Kathy Groski, Tammy Hehl, Kristen Gensler, Josie Olson, Katherine Ward, Russell and Reed Werkhoven; several great grandchildren; sisters: Kathleen Hartley and Sandra (Ted) Weatherly; several nieces and nephews.   Tom is preceded in death by his parents; first wife of 48 years, Edith "Mae" and his second wife, Mary Ann.
