Private family funeral service for Mary Ann Salo, 86, lifelong resident of Gilbert, was held at 10am Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Fr. Charles Flynn officiated. Burial was in the Gilbert Cemetery. Mary died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at her residence. She was born June 30, 1927 in Gilbert, MN to Thomas and Ann (Skrup) Devich. Mary was a 1945 graduate of Gilbert High School and later attended Eveleth Jr. College. Following her schooling, she married Armas Salo in Hibbing. Mary loved Gilbert! Besides being a homemaker, she kept extremely active with Gilbert history, politics, committees and celebrations until her recent decline in health. She was especially active and served on the Gilbert City Council, served may years on the Police Commission, was active in DFL politics and served as past president of the Gilbert American Legion Auxiliary. Mary was a 70 year member of the Croatian Fraternal Union. She was especially proud to be chosen for the Grand Marshal of the 1992 Gilbert 3rd of July parade. Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Markovich of Virginia; grandson, Jerel (Amanda) Markovich of Bovey; great grandchildren: Andrea, Emma and Daniel; brother, Edward (Marge) Devich of Gilbert; nephews: Todd (Rachel) Devich and their son, and Dr. Nicholas (Jill) Devich and their children. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Armas; son-in-law, Ron and a grandson in infancy.
