Violet A. Garland

Memorial service for Violet A. Garland, 94, of Gilbert, MN formerly of Poplar, Wisc., will be 11am Friday, October 17, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church in Poplar, WI with Pastor Donna Rutten and Pastor Lemoyne Boleman officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Lakeside Township, WI. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert, MN. Violet died Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Northern Pines Medical Center in Aurora, MN. She was born January 4, 1920 in Plymouth, MN to Paul and Lula (Welch) Winnen. Violet was a 1940 graduate of Minong High School in Minong, WI and later married Ward Garland on June 14, 1942 in Spooner, WI. She was employed as an assistant cook for the Northwestern School District in Maple, WI for over 16 years. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Poplar and the Villagers Homemakers Club in Poplar. Violet especially enjoyed knitting, crocheting and playing UNO, Yahtzee, BINGO and Cribbage. Survivors include her children: Douglas (Dorothy) Garland of Biwabik, MN, Patricia (Robert) Huettl of South Bend, Ind., Kenneth Garland of Lake Nebagamon, WI and Gean Garland of Aurora, MN; daughter-in-law, Rose Garland of South Range, WI; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; brothers: Victor Winnen of Racine, WI and David (Gerri) Winnen of St. James, MN; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ward; son, Richard; grandsons: Brian and Charles; great granddaughter, Christie; brother, Harold; two sisters-in-law: Josephine and Bess.
