Memorial service for Leo C. Grippe, 84, of Biwabik, will be 11am Monday, November 24, 2014 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Pastor Paul VanAntwerp officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik, MN. Leo died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Essentia Health – St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was born November 25, 1929 in Gilbert, MN to Charles and Ann (Loisel) Gripp. Later, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret “Margie” Hawley on Sept. 6, 1947. To that marriage, they had five sons: Dennis, Edward, Allan, Thomas and David. Margie died on August 24, 1958. He later married Shirley Steinbach on June 8, 1963 and to that marriage, daughter, Val and son, Duane were born. Leo worked for the Embarrass Mine for 10 years as an Engineer Assistant. Later, he worked for Erie mining Company as a Plant Engineer for five years and finally as a Chemical Analyst for 20 years, retiring in July 1983 with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Biwabik Co-op where he served as Director, the Biwabik Credit Union, serving as Director, Treasurer and Manager, the Biwabik Chamber of Commerce, the Planning Commission and the Highway By-pass Committee. He was also active in the Northern Lights Assoc., the MN Senior Federation, NRA, the Erie Salaried Committee and was a volunteer for the Virginia/Eveleth Nursing Homes. He was a life-long hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; children: Dennis (Kathy) Grippe of Biwabik, Edward Grippe of Biwabik, Allan (Georgina) Grippe of Georgia, Thomas Grippe of Biwabik, David (Kimberly) Grippe of Biwabik, Val Grippe of Biwabik and Duane (Bonnie) Grippe of North Dakota; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one expected great grandchild; brother, Charles (Jean) Gripp; sisters: Florence Mannelin and Anne Tabery; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Margie; siblings: James, Alice, Dorothy, Mary, Anthony and Angeline.
