Following graduation, Gene entered in US Air Force where he served during the Korean War as a ham radio operator. Upon his honorable discharge, Gene was employed by Western Union in Racine, WI. Then in 1957, the family moved to Hoyt Lakes where Gene had been employed by Erie Mining Company and finally as a stock room and attendance “truant” officer at the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Schools until his retirement in 1982. Gene took a post retirement job working for the Hoyt Lakes recycling center which he enjoyed. Gene was an active member of the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard, the Hoyt Lakes VFW, and the Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes where he served as an Usher Captain for fifty years. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards and cribbage, bowling, operating his ham radio, agate hunting, walking, and feeding deer. Most of all, Gene loved spending time with his family.
