A gathering of friends and family for Elvie Eleanor Mackey, 86, of Palo will be 1-3 pm Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Loon Lake Community Center in Palo. Inurnment will be in the Rauha Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Elvie died Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the Essentia Health-Northern Pines Medical Center in Aurora. She was born on October 20, 1929 to Oscar and Sylvia (Halmet) Hokkanen in Palo. She grew up and attended school in Palo and Aurora, graduating from the Aurora High School, Class of 1948. She was united in marriage to Veikko “Arnold” Mackey on October 11, 1952 in Palo. The couple made their home in Palo and raised their family. Elvie was a longtime employee of Halmet’s General Store. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the Palo Sr. Citizen’s Club, Palo TOPS, and a volunteer for the AEOA Meals on Wheels. Elvie was an avid reader. She also enjoyed being at the cabin on the Whiteface Reservoir and especially enjoyed spending time with her three grandchildren. Survivors include her four children: Doug (Norma) Mackey of St. Paul, Jeanine Oberbillig of Aurora, Scott Mackey of Palo, and Julie (Kreg) Mineheine of Palo; three grandchildren: Kevin and Kelly Mackey, both of St. Paul and Chelsea Mineheine of Palo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Veikko “Arnold”; brother and his wife: Laurie and Betty Hokkanen; an infant sister: Helena Hokkanen; and her parents.
