Funeral service for Ina Sarah Kumpula, 98, of Aurora, will be 10:30am Saturday, December 19, 2015 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Palo with Pastor Art Dale officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at a later date in the Rauha Cemetery in Palo. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Ina died Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Essentia Health – Northern Pines in Aurora, Minnesota Ina was born September 24, 1917 in Makinen, MN, one of nine siblings to Esko and Hannah (Latvala) Leppanen. She was a graduate of Cotton High School and on February 4, 1939 married Frank Kumpula in Palo. In 1943 they moved to Superior, WI where Frank worked at the Butler Shipyard. In 1946 they moved to Palo where they lived on Kumpula Lake until 1963 when several moves began. To Eveleth, Biwabik, Birch Lake and Virginia. After Frank died in 1997, Ina continued to live at the Laurentian Apartments in Virginia until 2004 when she moved into the assisted living facility at Iron Gate Apartments in Aurora. In 2009 she moved to the nursing home at Essentia Health Northern Pines in Aurora. Ina worked at the Cluett Peabody Shirt Factory for several years and at Loken’s Bakery in Aurora. Many happy years were spent at their cabin on Lake Vermilion. When she became widowed, she needed more to do after being Frank’s caregiver for many years so she became a foster grandparent at Parkview School in Virginia. She was a good cook and baker, seamstress, a crafter and a “crafty” card player of the game smear. She loved gardening and especially fishing. Ina was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and past member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Aurora and Makinen Centennial Committee. At age 93 she was crowned Valentine’s Day Queen at Northern Pines. She participated in all the activities until she was unable to do so. She is survived by her children: Vyna Grivette of Aurora and Arlen (Josephine) Kumpula of Thousand Oaks, CA; grandchildren: Kyle (Rae Harris), his former wife Lynne Smith-Grivette, Kraig (Renee’) Grivette, Kristen (Kent) Larson, Leah (Phil) Potter, Amy Kumpula,; step-grandchildren: Denise (Rene) Duran, Michele (Joe) Goldberg; great grandchildren: Alexandra (Tom) Kelly, Troy (Chelsea) Grivette, Jillian, David and Riley Grivette, Jake and Luke Guzman, Drew and Ryan Potter; step great grandchildren: Caitlin Guzman, Jacob and Justine Goldberg, Danielle Kahn, Patrick, Derrick and Sienna Larson; step great great grandchildren: Lyla, Lucas and Darren Larson. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank; siblings: Eugene, Melvin, Everett, Ted, Miriam, Signe, Irene and Ellen; parents, Esko and Hannah and a son-in-law, David Grivette.
