Thomas Michael Royer August 13, 1953 – December 13, 2015 Tom was 62 years old when he passed away peacefully at his home in Andover, Minnesota, surrounded by his daughter and caregivers. His humor and courage were present until his final breath. Tom was born in Virginia, MN, and spent his early days as an Aurora/Hoyt Lakes resident. He traveled all over the US and lived in many different places, but the Range always pulled him back. He was a talented writer, carpenter and handy-man, enjoyed playing many different card games, basketball, and fishing. He loved being outside. Music played an important role in his life. He could name any song played and give background information on the song and musicians. Family, friends, neighbors, and laughter were some of the most important qualities in his life. Although he was a loving and kind father, “Grandpa” was his favorite title. In March 2011, he sustained a traumatic injury, leaving him paralyzed from his chest down and ventilator dependent. His strength and will to live gave him another 5 years to celebrate life. He began living this new life in Duluth where many caregivers helped him through some of his most difficult times. The support and love given by the nurses, aides, and other medical professionals that he met through his journey helped sustain him for many years. In December 2013, he moved to the Twin Cities to be closer to his daughter and granddaughter, where he eventually built a home and lived wonderfully. Despite the many setbacks, his humor and corniness remained and helped lighten the seriousness of his situation. His gift was making people laugh and he did not lose that trait when he lost so much else. Tom is survived by his daughters, Jobina Royer and Crystal Royer (Scott Lossing); stepson Joshua Johnson; Grandchildren: Ryan and Andrea Juopperi and Mya Lossing; siblings Diane Royer, Gary (Karen) Royer, Robert Royer, Barry Royer, David (Sharon) Royer, Susan (Doug) Sumpter, Bonnie (Ron) Royer, Paul Royer, and Sheldon Royer; many loved nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, friends and caregivers. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Dolores Royer; sister Judith Perttu and her son, Jesse; brother John “Bozo” Royer, and nieces Amanda and April Royer. The visitation and funeral services will be held at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral home in Gilbert, Minnesota. The visitation is on Sunday, December 20, 2015 from 1-3 p.m. The funeral is on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 11 a.m, followed by a graveside service at the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia, Minnesota. A luncheon and celebration of life will follow at the Gilbert VFW.
