Memorial service for David "Awesome" Duane Anderson, 66, of rural Gilbert, will be 10:30am Thursday, June 2, 2016 at United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth with Pastor Steve Weston officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Biwabik Township Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Gilbert VFW Post. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Dave died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. He was born July 3, 1949 in Virginia, MN to James and Annabelle (Korte) Anderson. Dave was a graduate of Gilbert High School and began working for Erie Mining Company. He was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam and Cambodia. Following his military service, he married Mary Ann Geist on May 1, 1971 at United Lutheran Church in Gilbert. He attended Eveleth Vo-Tech and earned his degree as a maintenance mechanic. He worked for Gulbranson Construction and other local construction companies on the Iron Range. Dave was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans of Virginia and the Gilbert Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He was also a member of the Minnesota Trappers Assoc. and the Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club. He served as President of Little Birch Lake Association for many years. David loved spending as much time as possible at the cabin that he called "Camp David". In the middle of winter or the heat of the summer you could find him there enjoying his hobbies of hunting, fishing, trapping and four wheeling. The coffee was always on and the fire pit was always ready. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; son, Erick (Jody) Anderson of Embarrass; step-grandchildren: Savannah Poaletti and Chloe Poaletti; brother, Leonard (Joyce) Anderson of Washington; sister, Patricia Jarvela of Britt; mother-in-law, Lucille Geist of Gilbert; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rodney James.
