Funeral Service for Muriel Eleanor Salo, 90, of the St. Louis River area will be 11 am Friday, July 15, 2016 at United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth with Pastor Steve Weston officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Gilbert Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Muriel died Monday, July 11, 2016 at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. She was born on April 1, 1926 to Hjalmer and Mamie (Lakkso) Nikunen in Sparta Location. She attended school in Gilbert, graduating from the Gilbert High School, Class of 1944. Muriel was united in marriage to Toivo “Toik” Salo on September 28, 1946. Muriel took great pride in caring for her home and family. She enjoyed traveling with family and the casino trips she took with her friends. “Maija” took the greatest pleasure in entertaining her large family and many friends. Survivors include her five children: Lowell (Pat) Salo of Wanamingo, MN, Sandie (Jack) Cronin of Forbes, Bill (Julie) Salo of Lakeland, Debbie (Randy) Weiberg of Lakeland, and Pam Kilpela of Markham; Grandchildren: Stacie (Jared) Kuehl, Emily (Mike) Moore, Dan (Rika) Weiberg, Tricia (Roger) Harsila, Ryan (Carrie) Weiberg, BillieJo (Rubel) Kabir, Joe (Shivahn) Salo, Jon Salo, Jacquie Salo, Jodi (Tony Wilson) Weiberg, Alissa (Eric) Zack, and Christie (John) Cheng, Shawn (Stacie) Kilpela, Nicholas (Tara Johnson) Kilpela, and Cameron Kilpela; twenty great-grandchildren; four siblings: Richard Nikunen of Lakeland, Ronald (Darlene) Nikunen of Makinen, Marilyn Jones of Eveleth and Patricia Hedman of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Toivo; infant son, Charles Douglas; grandson, Dean Kilpela; six siblings: Arthur, Raymond, Ralph, and Roger Nikunen, Ruth Cobb, and Shirley Torma; son-in-law: Edward Kilpela; and her parents.
