A Celebration of Life service for Cory James Maunu, 44, of Hoyt Lakes will be 2 pm Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Biwabik Covenant Church with Pastor John Jacquart officiating. A visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora, MN. Arrangements by the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Cory died Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Essentia Health-Northern Pines in Aurora. He was born on February 21, 1972 to Leslie and Carol (Mattila) Maunu in Virginia. He grew up and attended school in Eveleth, graduating from the Eveleth-Gilbert High School, Class of 1990. Following school, Cory enlisted into the US Air Force during Desert Storm, where he was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, NE. He worked as a diet therapy specialist at the Air Force Base hospital. Upon returning home, Cory went to work for UPS for ten years. Cory later earned a BS degree in applied psychology from Bemidji State University. On October 9, 2004 Cory was united in marriage to Patricia Skinner. Cory chose to pursue his passion of spreading the Word of Christ. The couple moved to the Chicago area where Cory attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, receiving a Master of Divinity degree. Most recently, Cory had been working as a full time substitute teacher at the Mesabi East Schools. Cory took great pride in maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise and eating well. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and writing. He especially took pleasure in studying and spreading the Word of God. Survivors include his wife: Patti; three daughters: Grace, Faith, and Sophia; his parents: Les and Carol of Eveleth; one brother: Jon (Dara) Maunu of Warroad; father and mother-in-law: Glyn and Carol Skinner of Palo; brothers-in-law: Tom (Lori) Skinner of Bolingbrook, IL and Darrin (Andrea) Skinner of Altoona, WI; sister-in-law: Anita (Mike) Stangler of Sartell; ten nieces and nephews: Hannah (Cassidy) Olson, Hailee, Gabe, and Hope Maunu, Kayla (David) Bumpus, Rachel, Janelle, Karalyn, Elliot, and Alexandra Skinner; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: John and Taimi Mattila and Leonard and Rose Maunu.
