On October 21st, 2016, Raymond Schaefbauer rode off into the sunset, or he may have been galloping off into the moon shine. Ray was a relieved graduate of the 8th grade in Herreid, SD. After spending his teen years breaking horses, thrashing, and bailing, he joined the US Navy and saw the world. This planted the seed that led to the numerous travels he and Johanna would take over the years. Ray was a hardworking locomotive mechanic and farmer. He raised his large family and small herd on the Iron Range. Ray’s notorious shenanigans and unique sense of humor made him well loved by all. Owlie, Shifty, Ray, Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, and/ or Senor was always eager to be dealt in on a hand of cribbage, poker, or 3-13. Thanksgiving won’t be the same without his presence at a rowdy game of Crap on Your Neighbor. We all give thanks for the opportunity to have had this wonderful man in our lives. Ray will be met in heaven for a long awaited pinochle tournament with his son Ray Frank, his parents Annabelle and Joe, and his brothers Norbert, Bob, and Butch. To continue his legacy, he is leaving behind Johanna, his loving wife of 64 years. Daughters: Sharon, Rhonda, Lorna, Melanie, and Joan and sons: Roland, Rodger, and Jonathan, as well as numerous grand and great-grandchildren. God Bless. Funeral Mass for Raymond Schaefbauer, 85, of Hutter, will be 10am Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gilbert with Fr. Eamonn Boland as celebrant. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7pm with recitation of the rosary at 6:30pm at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Visitation will also be for one hour prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be at a later date in the Biwabik Township Cemetery. Unfortunately we will not be serving Mountain Oysters, and in lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
