Memorial service for Helen L. Nelson, 80, of Hoyt Lakes, will be 10:30am Friday, October 28, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes with Pastor Barbara Hegfors officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Helen died Saturday, October 22, 2016 at her home. She was born October 29, 1935 in Rochester, MN to George and Frieda (Rucker) Steck. Helen was a graduate of Rochester High School and later married John Nelson on June 4, 1966 in Decorah, Iowa. Helen worked as a nurses aid at Methodist Hospital in Rochester. She was a homemaker and in 1993 moved to Hoyt Lakes. Here, she worked as a laundress for the Biwabik Lodge and was a wreath maker for Evergreen Industries. Most recently she worked for Environmental Health in Hoyt Lakes. Helen enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening and was a former league bowler. Survivors include her husband, John; children: Denice “DeeDee” (Darrell) Skruppy of Eagan, Linda (Gary) Betcher of Eagan, Carol (Bruce) Finley of Aurora, John Nelson Jr. of Chicago, Brenda Zimmerman of Pine Island, Tammy Ptacek of Blooming Prairie and Mike Nelson of Louisville, KY; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, William “Billy” Steck of Oklahoma She is preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Nathan; daughter, Iva; brother, John and sister, Marita
