A remembrance gathering for Larry Gene Powell Sr., 68, of Palo will be 2pm Saturday, January 7, 2017 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Palo. A private family burial will take place in the Rauha Cemetery in Palo. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Larry died Sunday, December 25, 2016 at his home. He was born on August 29, 1948 to Eldon and Edna (Johnson) Powell in Rush City, MN. Larry’s family moved to Hoyt Lakes in the 1950’s. He graduated from Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School, Class of 1966. Following school, Larry was employed by Erie Mining Company. Larry was drafted in the US Army, where he served in Vietnam and Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, Larry returned to Erie Mining, later LTV Steel, working on the rubber crew, changing and repairing conveyor belts until his retirement after thirty-one years of service. Larry was united in marriage to Donna Tapio. They had two sons, Larry Jr. and James. Later, Larry married Diane Clark Servaty until her untimely death. Larry married Amy (Shulman) Jacobson on July 28, 2002. Larry and Amy were currently living on Loon Lake in Palo. He enjoyed playing music and playing in his band, “The Lower Unit” for many years. He was a collector and repairman of vintage clocks. He also enjoyed his horse, Lee “Karmelita” and working on his hobby farm in Palo. Survivors include his wife, Amy; sons: Larry Jr. of Aurora, James (Tracy) of Eveleth; three stepdaughters: Nancy (Joseph) Newhard of Allentown, PA, Gwendolyn Gustafson of Embarrass, and Allison (Darin) Freed of Allentown, PA; twelve grandchildren; three brothers: Loris of Aurora, Lloyd (Suzanne) of Duluth, and Laird of Aurora; two sisters: Linda (Ronald) Hill of Savanna, IL and Lorna (John) Fondurulia of Hoyt Lakes; close family friend: Forest “Fearless” Foster; and his bandmates: Mike “Chubby” Zallar, Ed “Fast Eddy” Alto, and Lanny Nachtman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Edna Powell.
