A gathering of friends and family for Robert Roy Messner, 92, of Hoyt Lakes will be from 1-3 pm Friday, February 24, 2017 at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Military honors will be accorded by the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes Color Guard. Inurment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Cass Lake at a later date. Robert died Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Essentia Health-Northern Pines in Aurora. Robert was born May 17, 1924 to Roy and Ferdelia Messner in Ashland, WI. He grew up in Ashland, WI until his family moved to Keewatin where Robert graduated from the Keewatin High School, Class of 1942. Following high school, Robert attended Hibbing Junior College for one year before enlisting in the US Army. Robert served in the Army during WWII. On July 2, 1950 Robert was united in marriage to Doris Prothero in Cass Lake while Robert was there working for the Great Northern Railroad. In 1957 the family moved to Hoyt Lakes when Robert began working for Erie Mining Company. He retired from Erie Mining after thirty years of service. Robert was a member of the Aurora American Legion, Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes, and a lifetime member of the Hoyt Lakes VFW. Robert had enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 62 years: Doris; two sons: Robert (Diana) Messner of Forsyth, MT and Ronald Messner of Biwabik; three grandchildren: Wade Messner, Amy Pederson and Tara (Ryan Hayes) Koch; six great-grandchildren; and one nephew: Richard (Karen) Ziminski. He was preceded in death by his sister, Doris; and his parents.
