Fred C. Schmiege Jr., age 90, passed away peacefully at Northland Village in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota with his loving grandson, James Jarvi, by his side. Fred was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on January 25, 1927, the son of Fred and Julia Schmiege. Shortly after his birth, they moved up north to Balsam, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Alice, his son James and his sister Nyola Barwise. Fred is survived by his sister Dorothy Findley from Seattle; daughters: Jean Davidson (Dale) and Sandra (Sandy) Schmiege; his grandchildren: Bobbi Sheley (James) from Phoenix, James Jarvi (Julie) from Eveleth, Eric Davidson (Theresa) from Baltimore; his seven great grandchildren; Darius, Brianna, Garrett, Kaitlyn, Kyle, Julia and Emily. Fred was passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish and had success deer hunting at age 88. Fred served his country during World War II in the Merchant Marines in the Aleutian Island chain in the Bering Sea. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aurora, the American Legion and the National Rifle Association. Funeral service for Fred will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 500 W. Central Avenue in Aurora, Minnesota at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 with visitation one hour before service. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.
