Funeral service for Dr. Raymond M. “Doc” Martinson, 91, lifelong resident of Eveleth, will be 1:30pm Friday, March 24, 2017 at United In Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth with Pastor John Dietz officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7pm at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Jim Forsman, Dave Prusak, John Intihar, Keith Shatava, Pete Burla, Gary Chilcote, Bret Kokal and Paul Coldagelli. Doc died Monday, March 20, 2017 at Edgewood Vista in Virginia, Minnesota. Dr. Raymond M. Martinson was born in Eveleth to Eric and Minnie Martinson, April 25, 1925. Doc graduated from Eveleth High School and joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific building airfields where he discovered his love of flying and became a licensed pilot. Upon discharge in 1946, Doc attended the Eveleth Junior College. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota receiving a degree in Mortuary Science. He later returned to pursue a medical degree and was Alpha Omega Alpha. Doc Martinson practiced medicine at the former East Range Clinic and also as an independent physician well into his 80's. He loved being a team doctor for many Range schools where he proudly wore his fur hats. In 1975 he became the Deputy Coroner for St. Louis County for many years. He served on Eveleth Fitzgerald Hospital staff and was Chief of staff in 1980. Doc Martinson was the Eveleth 4th of July Grand Marshall, honored as an inductee in the Mesabi Range College Hall of Fame, and was a WWII veteran on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He traveled to Europe from 1978 to 1992 with the University singers from UMD. Dr. Martinson was a member of the United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth, a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner. Doc was a caring physician for 57 years and a friend to all. Doc is survived by his sister-in-law, Dolores Martinson of Hibbing and his sister Minnie (Don) Swanson of Franklin, N.C., sixteen nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Ellen Serra, Margaret Nollett, William Martinson and Ron Martinson. In lieu of flowers memorial preference to the Eveleth Area Community Foundation or the Hippodrome Legacy Committee.
