Barbara H. Nossum

Barbara Helen Nossum, 73, of Aurora, was called home peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017 at her daughter’s home while under hospice care in Aurora. She was surrounded by her loving sister Elizabeth “Betty” (nee Emanuelson) Bourgoyne who was with her daily for the last 3 weeks, and her daughter Amy Nossum. Barb was born April 29, 1944, in Duluth at St. Mary’s Hospital to Clarence Carl and Patricia May (nee Collins) Emanuelson. She attended school at Duluth Cathedral, and later secondary school. While working at St Mary’s Hospital as a CNA, she met Richard P. Nossum who was also employed as an orderly and they married on October 9th, 1965 at St. Anthony’s Church in Duluth. In 1976 they moved to Aurora and built their first home. Barb worked for Virginia Hospital as a ward clerk and pioneered the Ward Clerk Secretary program in the area by teaching classes at Eveleth Vo-Tech. She also pioneered the Junior Achievement program via the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes school in the 1990’s. Barb continued working as ward clerk and eventually transitioned over to White Community Hospital in Aurora until her early retirement. She is survived by her devoted daughter Amy Nossum (life partner Daniel Toms), her spirited grandson Jaden Johnson (and his father Erik of whom she still held high regards for, including Jaden’s grandfather John Johnson of whom she enjoyed his sarcastic wit), loving sister Betty Bourgoyne of whom they spoke up to twice daily on the phone, Amy’s best friend and “soul sister” Patti (nee Wood) Anderson and the entire Wood clan, sister-in-law Janice (Donald) Carlson, 2 nieces and 3 nephews, many cousins and grand-neices & grand-nephews, & her multitude of supportive friends over many years, including Linda Pauling and Kitty Anderson. Barb was preceded in death by her husband Richard (1989), her parents Clarence (1986) and Patricia Emanuelson (1979), her favorite grand-dog Bailey, and family poodle of 19 years Tuffy. Memorial service will be held at 10am Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora with Fr. Peter Lambert officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Park Hill Cemetery in Duluth, MN.
