Memorial service for Marie Janet Grovum, 88, of Gilbert will be 1 pm Monday, January 29, 2018 at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Pastor Erik Roth officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Biwabik Township Cemetery. Marie died Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the St. Therese Home in New Hope, MN. She was born on July 26, 1929 to Frances and Levina (Pitchford) Leigh in Potamo Township and grew up in the Thief River Falls area. Marie was united in marriage to Palmer Grovum on December 11, 1946 in Grygla, MN. At the age of 40, Marie pursued her education. She earned her high school diploma and continued on to college. This was an achievement of which Marie and her family are very proud. She had worked at the Arrow Shirt Factory and the Eveleth Nursing Home where taking care of others was a passion for Marie. Marie enjoyed four wheeling, mowing her lawn and especially deer hunting. She was known to always take the biggest bucks. Marie was known by first name at many of the local restaurants. She looked forward to Friday Fish Fry at Wandering Pines. Marie also enjoyed traveling especially to Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii, and Disneyland. She was a member of the Gilbert VFW Ladies Auxiliary and also volunteered at the Biwabik Township Cemetery. Survivors include four children: Larry (Susana) Grovum of Brooklyn Park, Darlene (David) Cass of Texarkana, TX, Lowell (Irma) Grovum of Gilbert and Connie Bombenger of Hinckley, MN; six grandchildren: Sally (Tom) Cass-Martin, Kevin (Billie-Jo) Cass, Aaron (Luann) Grovum, Eric Grovum, Michael and Scott Bingel; nine great-grandchildren: Dakota, Hailey, McKenzie and Kylie Bingel, Brandi Schaefer, Dylan Grovum, David and Sharon Cass, and Migual Souza; two great-great grandchildren: Vienna and Bennett Bingel; one sister: Marlys Devries of Rochester; a brother: William “Billy” (Carol) Leigh of Michigan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer; a granddaughter, Holly Bombenger; siblings: Raymond, Howard, Lawrence, Mary, Margaret, Mildred, Wesley, and Mabel; son-in-law, James Bombenger and daughter-in-law: Debra Grovum.
