A celebration of life for Helmi Irene Kauppi, 82, of Aurora, will be held from 3-5pm Friday August 27, 2010 at the Aurora American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the White Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in Aurora. Private family graveside services will be held in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. Local arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Helmi died Sunday August 15, 2010 in the Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora. The family wishes to express its profound gratitude to the exceptionally wonderful, caring staff at the White Community Nursing Home. She was born June 25, 1928 in Aurora, MN to John and Amanda Maki. Helmi was a graduate of Aurora High School and later married Walter Lahti. She began raising her family and worked as a cook at White Community Hospital and later at Kangas Rest Home in Palo. In 1971 she married Henry Kauppi and they resided in Palo. She was a member of the Aurora American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed cooking, camping, canoeing, gardening and fishing. Helmi was an extremely kind, caring, loving mother who is deeply missed. All who knew her will remember her beautiful hair. Survivors include her husband: Henry, children: John Lahti of Aurora, Marion (Mike) Hermens of Walnut Creek, CA, Susan (Bill Flahave) Lahti of Blaine, Janice Monsrud of Aurora and Howard (Vicky) Lahti of Aurora, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, step children: Ernie (Jean) Kauppi and Forest (Janet) Kauppi of Lakeland, several nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law: Warren Monsrud, one sister, four brothers.
