David E. Hirsch

Memorial service for David E. Hirsch, 75, of Gilbert, will be 11:00am Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Pastor Jeanne Madsen officiating.  Family and friends may gather for visitation one hour prior (10:00am) to the service.  Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Gilbert VFW Post Color Guard, followed by a luncheon at the Gilbert VFW.

David passed away peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2023 in Mesa, Arizona surrounded by his wife and sons.

He was born April 22, 1948 in Eveleth, Minnesota to John and Ann (Masera) Hirsch.  He grew up in Elcor and McKinley, where he attended school thru the fifth grade.  He was a 1966 graduate of Gilbert High School.  Following high school, he enlisted with the US Air Force serving June 1966-June 1969.  During that time, he was stationed in Texas, Germany and Sardinia.  

On April 21, 1979, he married Sally Mattson in Virginia.  They made their home in Gilbert and began raising their family.  Dave worked for DuPont for almost 10 years until the closure of area mines.  Then, he began working for the City of Gilbert where he was a heavy equipment operator for nearly 30 years.

Dave enjoyed doing anything with his family and following his retirement, Dave and Sally enjoyed 12 years of wintering in Arizona. He especially enjoyed spending time with his three grandsons. Dave was an active member of the Gilbert VFW and its color guard.

Survivors include his wife, Sally; sons: Ryan (Nicholas Miller) Hirsch and Scott (Vanessa) Hirsch; grandchildren: Mason, Logan and Kaden; siblings: Barbara (Larry) Carlson, John (Patti Bakker) Hirsch and Greg Hirsch; brothers-in-law: Perry Smith, Tim Bradach, Richard Erchul and Paul (Lauri) Mattson; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann; sisters, Jacqueline Smith and Debbie Bradach; father and mother-in-law: William C. and Ella Mattson; brothers and sisters-in-law: Charles (Gail) Mattson, Dennis (Margaret) Mattson, Shari Erchul, and Janie Hirsch; special Uncle Ed Masera; his canine companions, Oliver and Gus.
