Funeral Service for Joanne Hakala, 71, of Markham, will be 11am Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Palo with Pastor John Dietz officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7pm at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in the Markham Cemetery in Colvin Township, Minnesota.
Joanne died Sunday, February 2, 2020 at Essentia – St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth surrounded by family.
She was born June 23, 1948 in Rochester, Minnesota to Norman and Violet (Kingsley) Christensen. Joanne was a 1966 graduate of Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School and later attended Eveleth Vo-Tech for clerical education.
She married Tom Hakala on October 14, 1967 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Palo. Joanne worked as a medical records secretary for the East Range Clinics. She and Tom moved to Isle where she worked at a snowmobile assembly plant. She also worked for Boatel Houseboats in Mora, MN as a houseboat manufacturer.
They returned to the Range in 1970 where Joanne became a meticulous homemaker and enjoyed raising her family. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Joanne was an avid outdoorswoman who enjoyed fishing, driving the boat while boating. She enjoyed the serenity of her home and life at the lake.
Survivors include her husband, Tom; daughters: Jeri (Doug) Fuller of Bemidji and Lori Hakala of the Twin Cities; grandchildren: Olivia Landgren, Ian Landgren and Alexis Fuller; siblings: Dale Christensen, Norma (Chuck) Stephans, Terry (Becky) Christensen, Vickie (Gordy) Popovich and Jim (Pam) Christensen; several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Violet.
