Marvin L. Kopp

December 17, 1926 — August 11, 2024

Hoyt Lakes, MN

Marvin Leo Kopp, 97, of Hoyt Lakes, died August 11, 2024 at Northern Pines Care Center in Aurora, MN. Marvin was born December 17,1926 to Oscar and Marie (Jebsen) Kopp at Sutherland, IA.

He attended country school, and then Hartley, IA public school until the 8th grade. At that time he quit school to help his mother run the family farm as his father had passed away when Marvin was 10 years old.

He married Verna Hemmig on January 22, 1948. They lived on the Kopp family farm until moving to Hoyt Lakes in 1956, where he worked at Erie Mining Company, retiring after 30 years as a crane operator. After retirement Marvin and Verna wintered in Mesa AZ for 22 years.

Making many long lasting friendships along the way. Marvin was very active in his MN and AZ communities, always a ready volunteer. He was a retired member of the Hoyt Lakes Volunteer Fire Dept, Hoyt Lakes Garden Club, Co-owner of the Montgomery Ward Sales and Service Agency, and co-owner of K&W Enterprises. If you lived in Hoyt Lakes for any length of time you either knew him, or at least knew who he was. He had a hand in just about every civic project in town, especially in those early years. If you were a golfer you might know him for the many trees he planted on the course in the worst possible places, he would laugh every time you hit one or ended up behind one! Marvin enjoyed fishing, golfing, and in his later years - mornings at Vaughn’s with the Coffee Shop Guys.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Verna, son Lynn, grandson Kyle Keranen, sisters Mildred Meyer, Lorene Youde Espey, and Doris Garms.

He is survived by his son Larry (Karen) Kopp of Plymouth, daughter Lory (Scott Henry) Keranen of Aurora, daughter in law Doris Kopp of Hoyt Lakes, grandchildren Lynn (Deanna) Kopp Jr, Jamie (Melissa) Kopp, Matthew (Stephanie) Kopp, Marc (Veronica) Kopp, Jenna Kopp, Eric (Hillary) Keranen, Alex (Andrea) Keranen. Great grandchildren Jourdan, Khalix, Reese, Brandon, Samuel, Aiden, Emma, Mallory, Mason, Jace, Lincoln, Matteo, and Levon. Great great grandchildren Lyric and Azaleah.

Funeral service will be 11:00am Friday, August 16, 2024 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes with Pastor Charles Barnes officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior at the church. Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.
