Sylvia Eleanore Nissila, age 93, peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, February 17, 2024.
Sylvia epitomized grace, intellect, and an unwavering commitment to both her profession and her loved ones. She was born and raised in Markham on the family farm.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Senia Nissila and William Nissila, as well as her sister, Dee Hillstrom. Sylvia's memory will be forever cherished by her surviving brother, Mickey Nissila, along with her nieces and nephews: David Hillstrom, Gina Gusk (Terry), and Jeremy Nissila (Rebecca). Additionally, she leaves behind a legacy carried by her great nieces and nephews: Casey Hillstrom (Lauren), Heather Lowe (Cameron), Kye Hillstrom, Josh Gusk, Allison Gusk, Emily Gusk, Carter Gusk, Khloe Gusk, and Logan Nissila, as well as her great-great nieces and nephews: Charlotte Hillstrom, Callahan Hillstrom, Crawford Hillstrom, and Hunter Lowe.
She embarked on her journey of academic and professional excellence after graduating from Aurora High School in 1948. Driven by her passion for nursing, Sylvia pursued her education at the College of Saint Scholastica, where she earned her nursing degree. Her thirst for knowledge led her to pursue a PhD at the University of Minnesota, delving deeply into the realms of healthcare and philosophy.
Her dedication and expertise garnered respect, establishing her as a distinguished scholar and practitioner in her field. Throughout her career, Sylvia tirelessly championed for the well-being of her patients and the advancement of the nursing curriculum and as a profession as a whole.
Yet, beyond her professional accomplishments, Sylvia held her family close to her heart. Sylvia's kindness, and wisdom touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
As we bid farewell to Sylvia, let us honor her memory by celebrating the remarkable woman she was—a beacon of compassion, wisdom, and love. Though she may be gone, Sylvia will forever remain in our hearts, deeply missed yet eternally cherished.
Memorial service will be 11:00am Monday, February 26, 2024 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Palo with Pastor Jeanne Madsen officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior at the church. Spring burial will take place in the Markham Cemetery in Colvin Township, Minnesota. Local arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.
