Irene Fisher of Ely Lake, MN passed away on June 3, 2024 at Cornerstone Villa in Buhl. Irene was born on March 19, 1934 to Veikko and Anna Mulden in Embarrass, MN. She grew up in Embarrass, graduating from Gilbert High School. She married Ben Verbick in 1955 and settled in Gilbert where she raised her family. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years for the Vocational Center housed in Virginia High School. She was active on the church council and as a volunteer at United Lutheran Church in Gilbert and later at United in Christ in Eveleth. She took much pride in her community and was very active beautifying Gilbert’s main street. She was also a den mother with the Cub Scouts. In 1983, Irene married Earl Fisher and moved to Ely Lake. She enjoyed having family and friends to her home on the same lake where she spent time as a child. After retiring, Irene and Earl wintered in Sun Lakes, AZ. Her hobbies included golf, curling, gardening, berry picking and traveling with her sisters. She golfed her final round at the age of 89 with accuracy, parring a hole and thoroughly enjoying the outing.
Irene is survived by her three children, Ben (Brenda) Verbick of Dayton, MN, Greg Verbick of Stevens Point, WI, and Amy (Scott) Lilya of Chaska, MN; her best friends and sisters Ellen Pedicini of Ely Lake, Betty Cunningham of Britt, MN and Peggy (Peter) Hansen of Virginia, MN. She is also survived by step-daughter Ann (Dave) Bzdok of International Falls. Irene has six grandchildren: Benjamin (Christina) Verbick, Ashley (Alex) Litzenberg, Mitch Verbick, Molly (Tyler) Rodeheffer, Andi Lilya and Joey Lilya and four great-grandchildren: Bentley, Micah, Brynleigh and Nora. She loved having the little ones visit her playhouse in the backyard for “coffee” and a snack. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Fisher, her parents, Veikko and Anna Mulden and brother-in-law Louis Pedicini.
The family would like the thank the staff at Cornerstone Villa for their dedication and care of Irene during her last few months.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 20, 2024 at the United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth with Pastor Jeanne Madsen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Pike Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.
