Funeral Mass for Wayne Robert Mayer, 90, of Hoyt Lakes, will be 10:30am Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Our Lady of Hope Parish in Hoyt Lakes with Fr. Peter Lambert as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at church. Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Wayne died peacefully in his sleep at Northern Residence in Hawthorne, Wisconsin on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 where he resided with his wife, Lorraine. He was born February 1, 1928 in Mankato, Minnesota to John and Mamie (Erickson) Mayer. Wayne was a graduate of Mankato High School and later went on to get his Master’s degree in Education from the University of Oregon.
On June 5, 1950 he married Lorraine Hiniker, his high school sweetheart in Mankato. He began teaching elementary school in Luverne, Minnesota. He continued teaching in schools in southwestern Minnesota until 1960 when he accepted the position as Principal at the Hearding Johnson Elementary School in Aurora. He later became principal of the Cina School in Aurora, from where he finally retired.
Wayne developed, owned, and operated Birchwood Terrace Mobile Home Park in Hoyt Lakes. He was an active member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, served as President of Toastmasters and was a Boy Scout Troop leader.
Wayne was a kind, loving, gentle man who enriched the lives of all who knew him. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodcarving, traveling, and playing cards with friends and family. Wayne enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with them.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; children: DeAnn (Michael) Doty of Oxford, FL, Connie Bauer of Virginia, John Mayer of Bozeman, MT, Neil (Eva) Mayer of Hibbing, Jim Mayer of Virginia, Cindy (Bruce) Erickson of Virginia and Tracy Mayer of Champlin; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mamie; grandson, Christopher; great granddaughter, Heavenly; great grandson, Eric; siblings: Elinor, John, Ron and Jeanette; son-in-law, Raymond Bauer.
