Bill Maki, 81, of Aurora, passed away on February 6, 2025, at Essentia Health-Northern Pines. He was born on November 4, 1943, in Biwabik to Raymond and Elma (Wiirre) Maki. Bill grew up on the family farm south of Aurora. There, he developed a strong work ethic that shaped his entire life. A proud Finlander, he was known for his love of family, his quiet patience, and his infectious sense of humor.
Bill had his own unique way of speaking, but he always communicated with sincerity and wisdom, even if his English was imperfect. He didn’t need polished sentences to make an impact—his actions spoke volumes. Whether it was helping family, friends, or neighbors, Bill was always ready to lend a hand, often getting roped into tasks too big or ridiculous, but never complaining. He worked tirelessly for many years, including time at Jim’s Chevrolet, Koski Logging, R&M construction, Erie, and Hibbing Taconite, then retired after 30+ years from LTV. His mechanical knowledge was vast and his commitment to hard work was unmatched.
Bill’s love for his family was absolute. He was a devoted husband to Debbie, his soulmate for 54 years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful life. Bill was also a proud father to his three daughters—Polly, Bobbi, and Brenda—who meant the world to him. He loved his girls unconditionally and was always there to support them, no matter what. He adored his six grandchildren—Aili, Will, Reid, Lydia, Carter, and Aubree—who brought him endless joy.
Bill was a master wood stacker - an expert at making sure every piece fit perfectly. He loved his nightly sauna - we don’t think he missed a single night throughout his life. He also had a soft spot for his spoiled dog Annie, who was often seen riding on his lap in his truck. Bill was always on the move, whether visiting family, helping others, or just checking in with friends.
Bill’s legacy is one of selflessness, hard work, and unconditional love. He never sought recognition; he simply gave all of himself to those he loved.
Bill is survived by his wife, Debbie; daughters Polly (Chris) Johnson of Woodbine, GA, Bobbi Maki of Aurora, and Brenda (Chad) Skelton of Aurora; grandchildren Reid Lesar, Aili and Will Johnson, and Lydia, Carter, and Aubree Skelton; his brother, Eugene Maki of Negaunee, MI; sisters-in-law Carol and Lois Maki; along with many nieces, nephews, friends, and his beloved dog Annie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Kenny “Chubby” and Edward Maki; and sisters-in-law Judy Maki and Kathy Coy. Rest in peace, Bill. You were loved beyond measure and you will be forever missed. 💙
